SaeboFlex – Hand function is once again possible
What is the SaeboFlex
The SaeboFlex is a dynamic functional hand splint which allows an individual who has experienced weakness of the muscles controlling the hand and wrist, as a result of a neurological condition, to work on functional rehabilitation of their hand whilst supported in an optimal alignment.
How it works
The SaeboFlex supports the wrist and fingers into extension in preparation for functional activities. The user is able to grasp an object by voluntarily flexing his or her fingers against resistance of the spring system which then in turn assists in re-opening of the fingers to release the object.
Is it suitable for you?
The SaeboFlex is a custom fabricated orthosis and the clinicians at the Birkdale Neuro Rehabilitation Centre are trained assessors. So assessment and subsequent fitting of the orthosis would take place here at the centre and then the treating clinician will then devise a home treatment programme with use of the orthosis as well as incorporating its use into treatment sessions.
How it can help you?
The SaeboFlex can be used at any point in stroke rehabilitation whether it be immediately or several years, allowing an individual to work independently or in therapy on grasp and release of their affected hand. Due to the SaeboFlex maintaining your wrist and hand in the correct alignment it enables individuals to activate muscle groups which they previously were unable to and to incorporate the affected hand into functional tasks. Following one week of training with the SaeboFlex at home, John captured in the video below, found he was able to tie his shoelaces independently using both hands for the first time in 3 years.
