Birkdale Approach to Working with a Person Experiencing CEREBRAL PALSY

Birkdale Approach to Working with a Person Experiencing CEREBRAL PALSY

Cerebral Palsy (CP) doesn’t stop affecting lives after childhood—its challenges evolve,
making ongoing care crucial for adults. Many individuals with CP may find that as they grow
older, the impact of the condition changes, and so should their approach to managing it.
At Birkdale, we have worked with numerous individuals with Cerebral Palsy, providing
support from childhood well into adulthood. We understand that while the condition itself
remains consistent—whether dyskinetic, spastic, or another form—the way it manifests often
intensifies in adulthood.

Adults with CP often experience compensatory symptoms such as chronic pain, increased
muscle stiffness, reduced postural control, and abnormal movement patterns, including
issues with balance and the speed of their movements. These secondary effects can greatly
affect day-to-day living and independence, making it essential to adapt both treatment and
daily strategies as adults navigate new life stages.

As specialised neuro physiotherapists at Birkdale, we offer specific interventions to
improve postural control, balance, gait, and overall mobility. Whether you are looking to
enhance your ability to walk or simply move through your daily routines more comfortably,
our expert team is here to provide solutions that fit your unique needs.
We can also offer guidance during critical life transitions, such as planning for parenthood,
entering the workforce, or moving to a new home. Each of these milestones comes with its
own set of physical and logistical challenges, but with the right support and adaptive
strategies, they can be navigated successfully.

In the workplace, we can help you optimize your environment to increase accessibility and
comfort. This includes offering personalized advice on ergonomic chairs, cushions, and other
modifications that can make a significant difference in your productivity and physical well-
being.

No matter where you are in your life’s journey with CP, Birkdale is here to help you live as
independently and comfortably as possible, with expert advice and hands-on support tailored
to your needs.
