Innovative Sensorimotor Approach to Neuro Rehabilitation

Training Course:

Innovative Sensorimotor Approach
to Neuro Rehabilitation

18th and 19th May 2013

Designed for Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists who have a curiosity to develop a dynamic approach to their practice by assessing, observing and applying the latest sensory and motor techniques.

1. Enhance clinical effectiveness by learning how to apply the scientific information into sensory motor techniques

2. Learn techniques to integrate ocular motor skills in movements

3. Discover the role of optometrics in rehabilitation

4. Practical sessions – how to integrate clinically sensory, motor and ocular motor skills

5. The role of FES in sensory rehabilitation, specifically in the use of biofeedback

6. Understand the role of orthotics in optimising rehabilitation

Guest Speakers

Dr. Salim Ghoussayni
Business Development Manager

Ottobock Medical Care

Dr Salim Ghoussayni completed his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Surrey, where he was appointed lecturer in 2005, and currently acts as a Visiting Senior Fellow. Two of his main areas of research interest are gait analysis and rehabilitation using electrical stimulation. He has been involved in numerous projects, mostly focused on the measurement of human movement, particularly gait, and novel technologies used in physical rehabilitation. These include functional electrical stimulation and, more recently, applications of biofeedback and virtual reality technologies for gait re-education in amputees and cerebral palsy patients. Salim joined Otto Bock Healthcare in January 2010 and though the research and development have been very rewarding tasks, it is equally satisfying now to be an active part of driving such products into a market that has traditionally suffered from slow uptake; a very exciting part of the job is being able to engage with all stakeholders including clinicians, patients, parents and carers, charities and patient associations.

Birkdale Paediatric and Neuro Clinic

Farshideh is NHS trained and qualified (1977), she has worked in many centres of neurological excellence, including The National Hospital for Neurology, Great Ormond Street Hospital and Cheyne Hospital.

In 1987, she set up The Birkdale Clinic, responding to the demand – that the NHS cannot afford to fulfil – for more long term, consistent, intervention to improve a client’s quality of life.

Farshideh studied, and continue to, a broad range of physical therapy approaches, including Bobath, Peto, Carr and Shiatsu with many of the leading exponents of these disciplines.

She has developed an effective and innovative approach to complex neurological presentations in both the adult and paediatric populations that may be tailored to each individual.

Her area of special interest lies with children and young adults. She has extensive experience of most childhood conditions and their integration with family life over long time periods.

Farshideh is a member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy (MCSP) and also of the Organisation of Chartered Physiotherapists in Private Practice (OCPPP) and the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Neurology (ACPIN).

Sam qualified in 2001 with a degree in Orthotics and Prosthetics from Salford University. After graduating he took up a post as orthotist at Basingstoke NHS trust where he received post graduate training in paediatric orthotics. He later joined the team at Queen Mary’s Hospital, London and developed wider skills which included Adult and Paediatric Neuro rehabilitation and complex foot and ankle orthotics. He is also a fully qualified Vabene posture therapist.
