In June 2015 Professor Michael Armstrong from Miami University engineering department rang me to enquire if 15 engineering student could visit Birkdale Neuro Rehab Centre and together we could create tools that could be used in physiotherapy.
I was excited, very rarely the neurological patients or physios have any input in the tools that are used to assist with treatment.
This opportunity could not be missed as I really needed a bike which would be reasonably priced and could be used at home and would not occupy a big space in someone’s sitting room. A bike that would improve left and right coordination as well as eye tracking, would be fun and include some exciting games for children.
A tall order you might say!
The students came and watched the sessions; I was very impressed how quickly they grasped the idea and understood what was needed.
The students revisited after three weeks and each group presented their invention.
The first item was a bike with sensory handles so that it could improve tactile and had fun games and at a reasonable price of £125. WOW. I was excited to discover this was possible and disappointed that the current manufacturers’ charges are so high.
The next item was a pair of glasses which helped in tracking. Last but by no means least a website where therapists could add their ideas.
It was a pleasure having the students here at Birkdale Neuro Rehab Centre. I learned so much from their enthusiasm and perseverance. It was interesting how with two very different outlooks we were working for the benefit of our patients. I particularly appreciated their willingness to participate and how respectful they were of each patients’ space and condition.
Professor Michael Armstrong thank you so much for including me in your student’s learning journey. I look forward to seeing you all again in the near future.
