This is a one day practical training introducing the use of neuromuscular stimulation, covering a wide spectrum of neuro conditions in children.
In recent years there has been a shift in paediatric (and adult) neurorehabilitation to focus on sensation as well as on motor function. It is well evidenced that functional electrical stimulation (FES) can be used to improve sensation. Use of FES counters sensory deficits on three levels: improved sensations themselves; we can observe the direct perceptual consequences of improved sensation, i.e. improved weight transfer and postural awareness (alignment); Improved sensations work together to improve the symmetry, fluidity and gradation of gross movements.
By the end of this training you will:
- Learn to use FES in a range of different applications; to improve motor control in sitting, standing & gait and many more.
- Find out about different neurological conditions that FES can be used for i.e. CP, Spinal Injuries, Autoimmunity disorders…
- Learn to incorporate FES in daily living activities.
- Learn to target different patterns of movements.
This training is jointly run by Farshideh Bondarenko from Birkdale Neuro Rehab Centre and Kirsten Hart from Stoke Mandeville.
